[UPDATE: Klum's explanation about her costume appended below]
Supermodel Heidi Klum throws a big Halloween party each year - a bash attended by many celebrities. Last year, she went dressed as a cat. This year, she chose to dress as the Hindu goddess Kali.
Hard to imagine it would be all right for her to dress as a god of any other religion. What do YOU think? Post your comments below.
In the photo below, you will see that her husband, the singer Seal is dressed in a costume that appears to be that of Angulimala ("garland of fingers"), a killer who was converted by the Buddha to a life of faith (or is that some figure associated with Kali?).
UPDATE: Over at SepiaMutiny, V.V. doesn't think it's a big deal.
My initial thought was that I should be offended. Then I thought, why? Is that reasonable? People dress up as a range of characters, including ones with religious connotations, every year on Halloween. And this Kali is a pretty awesome costume. Klum certainly pulls it off with panache. Maybe that’s easier if you’re twelve feet tall and a model. She’s got all the details—look at what’s around her neck and waist!.
Over at Gawker, there's coverage and more pix, including comments from readers making the usual puns and observations about desi stuff.
UPDATE: UsMagazine.com has Klum's explanation:
How did Heidi Klum come up with the idea to be a scary Indian goddess for Halloween?
"It was actually my assistant's idea," she told reporters at her annual Halloween bash Friday at NYC's 1 Oak. "My husband [Seal] and I were in India last year, so she said, 'Why don't you do an Indian goddess? Like a scary Indian goddess?' And I said 'OK!'
"So then she Googled around and she found Kali and showed me a picture, and I loved it," Klum said. "I loved it because she's so mean and killed all these different people and [had] fingers hanging off [her] and little shrunken heads everywhere."
