"The Simpsons" opens this Friday, which means lots of stuff about the movie - and Apu - everywhere (see below for our previous posts on the topic.
The new issue of "Time Out New York" has a cover story on "Springfield in NY": "Inspired by The Simpsons Movie, we round up the show’s spiritual New York counterparts, in the flesh." They found a "real-life" Homer (a nuclear steam-pipe fitter named Jack Hammond) and, of course, an Apu (a deli owner named Tejas Shuph). Shuph, who owns Roosevelt Deli in Jackson Heights, says this about the Indian clerk stereotype:
“It’s hard. It’s hard. I deal with it every day. I’m as smart as my customers but I have trouble speaking English, you know? It hurts. But this country is the land of opportunity.”
