ADVERTISING: Now, Let's ID an Apple Model

Billboard3

Last month, I posted a photograph of a giant Manhattan billboard for Microsoft's Office 2007, featuring a South Asian model. I was sure that it was a great way to prove a theory.

...let’s test the “all desis know each other” theory and see if one of you can identify this model.

Despite the heroic efforts of Anna and the SepiaMutiny commenters, we were unable to identify her. I would still like to try and ID her. All clues welcome in the comments section below.

Now, an update. Three days ago, I noticed the billboard was gone, alas. Then yesterday, as I walked into the Apple Store on Fifth Avenue and 59th St with my wife and kids, we were greeted by the poster below ("Introducing One to One - Personal training at the Apple Store," it says). Come on, folks, let's ID her and give the theory a second chance. Post your comments below.

The same ad (from the billboard) is in the Time Magazine that's now on newstands -- the 100 most influential people issue. That's where I first came across this ad, which, by the way, I was thrilled to see. Unfortunately, I have no leads on the model.

Maybe one of us has the time to track down Apple's ad agency or in-house ad dept. I know I don't have the time ... but maybe some lovestruck techie can do the honors!

The first ad is in magazines all the time, it's often on the front cover of the New Yorker

Sree, come on, is it that important to know who this model is? There are tens of thousands of models around the world. There are bigger issues at stake in the world than knowing the name of a model. I mean, really.

There are wars going on. There are primaries for elections that many politicians are fighting for. There is devastation in Kansas city with the twister tornadoes. We have not recovered from Katrina and Rita. There is pet food poisoning, and now it could be pharmaceutical products with glyocol that comes from China. There is corporate and government corporation ... even for student loans. Walter Reed army hospital will soon be closing down. There are immigration and social issues. There are people starving. And there is Queen Elizabeth's visit to the U.S... I could go on and on. So does it really matter what this model's name is? Shall we just call her Rose, perhaps even Jasmine or Yasmin and move on?

I know you mean well. You are trying to lighten up the forum conversation because we hear too much of heavy news all day long. Perhaps we can have a "joke-a-day" for the forum. Not a bad idea, huh? Tell everyone to send you their funniest lines and let's see which one will have us going into stitches.

@Jaya: With all due respect: Chill. As far as I have read, this has never been a forum to discuss solutions to the world's socioeconopolitical problems. Someone correct me if I'm wrong: SAJAForum is about the world of South Asians and the world of journalism, and the ways in which those two worlds intersect.

(Also, *cough*, from the 3 piddly comments above, it doesn't look like anyone was really wasting oodles of time and brainpower on the question... And man, think about the good you could have done in the real world in the time it took you to put together that list of urgent but board-irrelevant woes...!)

More to the point, @Sree: check this out: http://www.msdewey.com

It should feed your desi fetish for a little while -- and it's another Microsoft gimmick (if http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ms._Dewey is to be believed!)

Simran, with all due respect ... you need to chill too. I thought this was a typical boyish article. Like the young boys say ... I'm going "girl watching."

Watch that girl ....

Now name that girl.

Perhaps that is no big deal for you. But a lot of young professional women don't like that. It sets us way back in time. And we have come a long way from that era. Simran, I did not intend to get into that "socioeconopolitical problems" either. You did not get the point I was trying to make. I was trying to state that we don't to see such articles again. We can discuss endless other subjects but not "name that girl/model" game, because it sounds so school-boyish.

Simran, you don't need to worry about me. I have done a lot of good in the world, much more than you would even care to know about. So cough yourself. Perhaps, it would do you good to try some of your own suggestions.

I'm cent-percent sure that it's Mausumi Khanna, my maths tutor's daughter's best-friend-who-moved-to-Amreeka's younger sister (it would be, if I ever needed to take maths tuitions ;))

sort of looks like this girl from the movie 'American Chai':

Good luck...
