The person who alerted me to the story about the Indian-American couple serving in Iraq for the U.S. Army wrote to me again, asking: "Tell me, how does
this lady come to be called Fixie?" He was, of course, referring to the wife's name, Fixie (her husband's is Cyriac).
These folks are Kerala Christians and while most have common Christian names like George and Joseph (see the name of the author of the article) or Hindu-ish names like Jyothi, Anil, Deepu, etc, there are some Malayalee names that will stand out even in a country with multi-syllable Hindu names (like Sreenivasan!). Here are some first names I have come across: Prince, Jespy, and my favorite, a young boy Tidy (rhymes with "giddy" - it was not a reflection on his cleanliness). Here are some last names, found only in ancient Rome and modern Kerala: Augustus, Fabian, Cletus.
